In the 23rd century, interstellar travel has been made possible by the discovery of "Otherspace," through which matter and energy can travel instantaneously. Rumors are circulating of a being called the "Otherspace Pirate" who plunders ships while they are in Otherspace.

A ship carrying three billion credits in gold enters Otherspace. When it appears, a moment later, the gold and the crew are missing. If the gold is not recovered, the recently-established revolutionary government of Travancore will fall.

Retired investigator Ajaka Olafsen is employed to look into the matter. On Travancore he repeatedly runs afoul of political intrigue. Nevertheless, he pursues his investigation. Announcing he has solved the theft, he is arrested.

Released when the government does fall, he reveals the true identity of the Otherspace Pirate.
